MK-677 might be the most misunderstood compound we sell. Half the internet calls it a SARM (it isn’t). The other half promises it will add 20 pounds of muscle in a month (it won’t). Somewhere under the noise sits a genuinely interesting compound with more human clinical data behind it than almost anything else in this space, including a two-year randomized trial published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

This guide covers what MK-677 actually is, what the human studies measured, realistic results and timelines, dosing used in research, the side effects nobody puts in their marketing, and where it stands legally in Canada. Every claim links to the study it came from. No bro-science, no recycled Reddit threads.

What is MK-677 (Ibutamoren)?

MK-677, also called ibutamoren, is an orally active growth hormone secretagogue. In plain terms: it mimics ghrelin, the hunger hormone, and signals your pituitary gland to release more of your own growth hormone. That pulse of GH then raises IGF-1, the hormone that does most of the actual work on muscle, bone, and recovery.

Two things follow from that mechanism, and they matter more than anything else in this article.

First, MK-677 is not a SARM. SARMs like RAD-140 or MK-2866 bind to androgen receptors. MK-677 never touches them. That’s why it doesn’t suppress testosterone, and it’s why people run it alongside SARMs rather than instead of them.

Second, it raises your own GH rather than injecting synthetic GH from outside. Your body keeps its natural pulsing pattern and its feedback loops. That’s the property that made Merck develop it in the 90s as a potential alternative to GH injections, which is also why the human research on it is unusually deep.

What the human studies actually show

Most compounds in this category have rodent data and anecdotes. MK-677 has multi-year human trials. Here’s what they found, with links so you can read them yourself.

Growth hormone and IGF-1: restored to young-adult levels

The landmark study is a two-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 65 healthy adults aged 60 to 81, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2008. Daily oral MK-677 increased GH and IGF-1 levels to the range of healthy young adults, and it kept them there for the full two years without the body adapting around it. Participants on MK-677 gained roughly a kilogram of fat-free mass while the placebo group lost it.

A kilogram over a year sounds modest next to forum claims. Keep the context: these were 60-to-81-year-olds who were not training. The study proves the mechanism works and keeps working. What a trained lifter gets out of elevated GH and IGF-1, better recovery, fuller muscles, improved sleep, is a different and bigger question than what untrained seniors measured.

Sleep: the most underrated effect

A 1997 clinical trial in Neuroendocrinology looked at sleep architecture on MK-677. Deviations from normal sleep dropped from 42% on placebo to 8% on the higher dose, with meaningful increases in deep (slow-wave) sleep. Ask anyone who has actually run MK-677 what they noticed first and most will say sleep, not size. Since deep sleep is when you release the most GH naturally, the effect compounds.

Bone density: slow but real

A trial in postmenopausal women published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found MK-677 increased bone formation markers, on its own and combined with alendronate. Bone adapts over many months, so nobody takes MK-677 for this effect alone, but it’s part of why the compound keeps showing up in healthy-aging research.

And one honest negative

A 12-month randomized trial in Neurology tested whether MK-677’s IGF-1 boost could slow Alzheimer’s progression. It didn’t. We mention it for two reasons. It shows the limits of the compound: raising IGF-1 is not a cure-all. And it adds another year-long safety dataset in over 500 patients to the picture, which is more than you can say for nearly anything else sold in this market.

MK-677 benefits, ranked by how solid the evidence is

Marketing pages list every benefit as equally certain. They are not. Here is the honest ranking, from trial-proven to commonly-reported.

1. Deeper sleep. The best-documented effect and the one users notice first. The sleep trial above measured deviations from normal sleep dropping from 42% to 8%, with more slow-wave sleep. For a lifter this is the quiet multiplier: deep sleep is when you recover, when natural GH release peaks, and when the next day’s training quality is decided.

2. Restored GH and IGF-1. The engine behind everything else, held at young-adult levels for two full years in the Annals trial without the body adapting around it. Day to day this shows up as better recovery between sessions and fuller-looking muscles from the extra glycogen and water they hold.

3. Lean mass support. Proven directionally in untrained seniors, meaningful in practice when you add training and a calorie surplus, which the trial participants had neither of. MK-677 does not build muscle by itself; it improves the conditions under which training builds muscle.

4. Appetite. Usually filed under side effects, but for a hard gainer this is the benefit. It is a ghrelin mimetic; eating enough stops being a battle. If you have ever failed a bulk because you could not force down the calories, this is the compound that fixes the actual problem.

5. Bone and connective tissue. The postmenopausal trial showed increased bone formation markers. Bone and tendon adapt over many months, so this matters most on longer runs and for heavy lifters whose joints carry the load their muscles recover from faster than their tendons do.

Commonly reported but not trial-proven: skin, hair and nail improvements, and easier joints. We hear both from customers constantly, and they fit the mechanism, but no controlled study has measured them. Treat them as a likely bonus, not the reason to buy.

What it will not do: burn fat (the two-year trial found no meaningful change in visceral fat), replace the direct anabolic signal of a SARM like RAD-140, or transform anything in a week. Anyone promising those three is selling, not informing.

MK-677 results: what to realistically expect

Based on the trial data and what several thousand of our own customers report, a realistic timeline looks like this:

  • Days 1 to 7: appetite goes up, sometimes a lot. That’s the ghrelin mimicry doing exactly what it does. Sleep often deepens within the first week.
  • Weeks 1 to 3: scale weight jumps 1 to 3 kg. Most of that is water and glycogen. Your muscles look fuller; it is not new tissue yet.
  • Months 1 to 3: recovery between sessions improves. Appetite settles. Combined with a real training program and a surplus, lean mass starts accumulating.
  • Months 3 and beyond: this is where MK-677 earns its keep. The two-year trial showed effects persist without tolerance, so longer runs are where body composition actually changes. Skin, hair, and nail changes, which people consistently report, also show up on this timescale.

Most dramatic before-and-after photos you’ll see are three weeks of water retention plus better lighting. The honest pitch for MK-677 is slower and more boring: eat more, sleep deeper, recover faster, and let months do the work.

MK-677 dosage: what the research used

The clinical trials ran 10 to 25 mg once daily, with 25 mg being the dose that restored IGF-1 to young-adult levels in the two-year study. Effects on GH plateau above that; more is not better, it’s just more appetite and more water.

Timing is a split decision. Evening dosing leans into the sleep benefit and hides the hunger overnight. Morning dosing suits people who want the appetite for hitting calorie targets. The half-life is long enough (around 24 hours) that blood levels stay steady either way.

Our MK-677 capsules are 15 mg each, 90 to a bottle, which covers common research protocols at one or two capsules daily. (Why capsules and never droppers? We compared capsules vs liquid SARMs properly.)

Side effects: the part marketing leaves out

MK-677 is one of the better-tolerated compounds in this space, but it is not free money. From the trials and from thousands of customer conversations:

  • Hunger. The most common effect by a wide margin. Great in a bulk, miserable in a cut. It usually fades after the first couple of weeks.
  • Water retention. Expect it early: a softer look, sometimes tighter rings or mild ankle puffiness. It comes off when you stop.
  • Blood sugar. This is the one to take seriously. The two-year trial recorded small increases in fasting glucose and a dip in insulin sensitivity. Healthy people handled it fine over two years, but if you’re prediabetic or diabetic, MK-677 is working against you. This is also the reason not to run it year-round back to back without breaks and without keeping an eye on fasting glucose.
  • Lethargy in some people. A minority report feeling sluggish, usually dose-related and usually solved by evening dosing.
  • Tingling hands or joint aches. Classic high-GH signals. Uncommon at research doses, and a sign to back off if they show up.

What you won’t get: testosterone suppression. MK-677 works on the GH axis, not the androgen axis, so there’s no PCT consideration from MK-677 itself.

Is MK-677 legal in Canada?

MK-677 sits in a gray zone. It is not a controlled substance in Canada, so possessing it is not illegal. It is also not approved by Health Canada for human use, which means it cannot be sold as a supplement or medicine; it’s sold for research purposes.

Where Canadians get burned is importing. Packages from US and overseas vendors cross the border as unapproved drugs, and CBSA can and does seize them. You wait three weeks, get a seizure letter instead of a package, and the refund conversation with an offshore vendor goes exactly how you’d expect. That border risk, more than anything else, is why buying from a domestic source matters here. Our orders ship from within Canada, so there is no border to cross. More on that whole topic in our guide to buying SARMs in Canada.

MK-677 vs SARMs: different tools

Because MK-677 gets lumped in with SARMs, people treat them as alternatives. They’re not; they’re different axes:

  • SARMs (RAD-140, MK-2866, LGD-4033): androgen receptor, direct anabolic signal, measurable testosterone suppression at meaningful doses.
  • MK-677: GH and IGF-1, indirect and slower, no suppression, with sleep and recovery effects SARMs don’t touch.

That’s why the most common way people run MK-677 is underneath something else: it covers recovery and appetite while an androgenic compound does the direct work. It’s also why it appears in most of our stacks, and why some people run it solo between other cycles purely for the sleep, recovery, and appetite.

Buying MK-677 in Canada: three things to check

The MK-677 market has a purity problem. Raw powder prices vary wildly by grade, and underdosed or substituted product is common enough that we built our whole business around disproving it. Whoever you buy from, check three things:

1. Current, verifiable lab testing. Not a PDF from 2021, and not “COA available on request.” Our latest MK-677 batch was blind-tested by Janoshik Analytical in September 2026 at 95.11% purity, and you can verify that report yourself on the lab’s own site, along with the rest of our third-party results. If a vendor can’t show you something you can independently verify, that tells you what you need to know.

2. Reviews tied to real orders. Anyone can paste five-star text onto a product page. Purchase-verified reviews through an independent widget are harder to fake. Our MK-677 page carries over 400 of them.

3. Domestic shipping. Covered above. If it crosses a border, you’re gambling with CBSA.

MK-677 FAQ

What are the main benefits of MK-677?

In order of evidence strength: deeper sleep, restored growth hormone and IGF-1 levels, better recovery and lean mass support, appetite for bulking, and slow improvements to bone. Skin, hair and nail changes are commonly reported but not trial-proven.

Is ibutamoren the same thing as MK-677?

Yes. MK-677 is the original Merck compound code, ibutamoren is the generic name, and Nutrobal is an old marketing name. Same molecule.

Does MK-677 suppress testosterone?

No. It works on the growth hormone axis and leaves the androgen axis alone, which is why no PCT is associated with it.

How long does MK-677 take to work?

Appetite and sleep changes typically show inside the first week. Water weight arrives in weeks one to three. Genuine body composition change is a months-long effect, consistent with the trial data.

Does MK-677 make you hungry?

Yes, usually noticeably, especially in the first two weeks. It’s a ghrelin mimetic; hunger is the mechanism, not a side quirk. Plan your diet phase around it.

Can you stack MK-677 with SARMs?

It’s the most common way people use it, since the two work on separate pathways. MK-677 covers recovery, sleep, and appetite while a SARM provides the direct anabolic signal.

How do I know my MK-677 is real?

Demand current third-party testing you can verify independently. Ours is publicly verifiable at Janoshik: 95.11% purity, tested September 2026.

Products discussed are sold for research purposes. Nothing here is medical advice; the linked studies are provided so you can evaluate the evidence yourself.
